Snow Boy (Yukio), 2009
(ceramic, polyurethane paint)

I was born in April 1969 in Yokohama, Japan, to a Japanese mother and English father. Born one minute past midnight, mid-spring with snow falling outside. In Yokohama it rarely snows in winter let alone mid-spring. The Doctor told my father this sign was auspicious, and told my father you should perhaps call your son Yukio or Snow Boy in English. My father kindly thanked the Doctor for his opinion and called me Mark Jonathan Grenville Richards instead.

I am adapting and appropriating archival images of baby forms to create a psychological space for self reflection. The work also attempts to build a dialogue between self-identity and the disillusionment I feel towards national identity.
